Honoring Veterans: A Reflection on Service and Sacrifice

As Veterans Day approaches, I think back to when I first raised my hand to serve. I enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1973, near the close of the Vietnam era — a time marked by uncertainty, responsibility, and courage. Even though the war was ending, the dangers were still very real. I lost seven friends when a B-52 bomber went down during a training mission in Anchorage, Alaska. That experience has stayed with me for a lifetime.

You’re not looking for recognition or reward when you take the oath to serve. You do it because you believe in something bigger than yourself — in duty, country, and protecting the freedoms we hold dear. That sense of purpose never leaves you.
